چکیده

In 1886 Hutchinson described the first case of alopecia totalis congenita associated with atrophy of the skin, and in 1904 Gilford reported a similar case and described it as premature senility (senilitas praecox) or progeria. From that time to the present about 20 cases have been described in the world literature (Curtin and Kotzen, 1929; Talbot, Butler, Pratt, MacLachlan and Tannheimer, 1945; Plunkett, Sawtelle and Hamblen, 1954). Up to the present time the diagnosis has been based, in the absence of any constant biochemical findings, upon the strange external appearance which is constant and recurs in all these cases. We are presenting the following case mainly because several results were obtained during the clinical and laboratory investigations that could be used to explain some of the features of this illness.

Child Neurology: cognitive delay in a 7-year-old girl.

Organic acidurias are an important group of inherited metabolic disorders that affect the intermediary metabolic pathways of carbohydrate, amino acid, and fatty acid oxidation, leading to the accumulation of organic acids.(1) The 2-hydroxyglutaric acidurias are rare neurometabolic disorders characterized by developmental delay with or without other neurologic dysfunction. Three different subtyp...

Report of a four-year-old boy with Progeria without total Alopecia

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is an extremely rare condition with features of premature and accelerated aging. The pattern of inheritance is unclear, although autosomal dominant mutations have been proposed. The disease presentation is usually in infancy and early childhood with a characteristic phenotype of short stature, abnormal skin and nail, beaked nose, loss of subcutaneous f...

Mice fed a lipogenic methionine-choline-deficient diet develop hypermetabolism coincident with hepatic suppression of SCD-1.

Lipogenic diets that are completely devoid of methionine and choline (MCD) induce hepatic steatosis. MCD feeding also provokes systemic weight loss, for unclear reasons. In this study, we found that MCD feeding causes profound hepatic suppression of the gene encoding stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase-1 (SCD-1), an enzyme whose regulation has significant effects on metabolic rate. Within 7 days of ...

Detection of inborn error of metabolisms by urine organic acid GC-MS in Southern China

Results We diagnosed 148 cases of IEM by urine GC-MS analysis, including 97 cases of organic acid disorders, 41 cases of amion acid disorders and 10 cases of fatty acid oxidative disorders. Methylmalonic aciduria (MMA) was most common (48 cases), followed by urea cycle disorder (21 cases), phenylketonuria (20 cases), propionic aciduria (11 cases), multiple carboxylase deficiency (8 cases), glut...

The amino-aciduria in galactosaemia.

Excessive quantities of amino-acids have recently been found in the urine of infants with galactosaemia (Holzel, Komrower and Wilson, 1952; Bickel and Hickmans, 1952). At first sight, the occurrence of amino-aciduria in a condition known to be associated with severe liver damage would suggest that the amino-aciduria is of the 'overflow' variety, namely, that it occurs as the result of a rise of...
